130 Years Ago (1875): At our usual Thanksgiving services a collection has been taken up and subscriptions given for a “charity fund,” to be disbursed by a proper committee, as circumstances during the winter might be presented. It is hoped that this charitable enterprise will not be forgotten this year, but rather increased. Union Thanksgiving services will be held in the Congregational Church Thursday, commencing at 10:30 a.m. Sermon by Rev. J. D. Cole.
120 Years Ago (1885): We learn from Messrs. Smith & Eager that Mr. Col. Geo. Hall was quite a loser in the Galveston, Texas, fire, and had several men repairing and making new his lost property. Mr. Sidney Smith thinks his losses will amount to about $2,000, which will bear down rather heavy upon George, but he cannot be squelched, he will arise again more mighty than ever.
110 Years Ago (1895): Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kendall are getting nicely settled in their new home, the Central House. Improvements in the way of handsome new dining room furniture, fresh painting and decorating have added greatly to the attractiveness of the house. Although Mr. and Mrs. Kendall are young they have spent some time in this hotel during the management of Wood & Kendall, and will be prepared to carry on the business successfully.
100 Years Ago (1905): Raymond Champney, only son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Champney of Cooksville, and Miss Mary Moore, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Moore of Brooklyn, were united in marriage at Rockford, Ill., Tuesday morning, Nov. 21, 1905, at 9:30 o’clock by the Rev. W. C. Keirstead, pastor of the First Baptist Church. The young couple arrived in this city on the noon train Tuesday. Both bride and groom are well known here, and are highly respected and a host of friends join in extending most hearty congratulations.
90 Years Ago (1915): Harold E. Morrison, of Evansville and Miss Hilda Olson, eldest daughter of Anton Olson, of Albion, were married at the Lutheran parsonage in the latter place, Saturday, November 13, by Rev. J. Linnevold. They went by train to Madison to proceed on a wedding trip through the northern part of the state, and will make their home in Evansville where Mr. Morrison is a shipping clerk in the Evansville mills.
80 Years Ago (1925): A few minutes before two o’clock last Saturday afternoon all Evansville radio listeners were anxiously waiting for the start of one of the big football games of the middle west, the annual battle between Wisconsin and Chicago. Evansville was to be represented on that determined Badger team. Rollie Barnum was the football player who was called upon to take the Wisconsin fullback position after Leo Harmon was injured, and Barnum was the name in most of the headlines Sunday morning announcing the Badger 20-7 victory over Chicago.
70 Years Ago (1935): Mr. and Mrs. Warren Rodd will entertain at a Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow in their home at 15 Garfield Avenue. The guests will be Robert Shreve, Appleton, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Austin, Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Richardson and sons, Robert and Lee, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Higday, John Higday, Gertie Rodd, and Mrs. Fred Rodd and daughter, Miss Evelyn Rodd, this city.
60 Years Ago (1945): William Ware has arrived in the states from the Pacific area and expects to be discharged from the Navy and return to his home here soon. William Erbs and Harry Byers, who were recently discharged from the armed forces have returned to work at the Baker Manufacturing plant. Pvt. Wayne Woodstock is serving in Hopkaido, near the city of Asihagawa, Japan. That part of the country has not as yet been completely disarmed.
50 Years Ago (1955): Mead and Hunt, who surveyed Lake Leota, recommend construction of a separate pool. The Madison engineering firm, which made a survey of Lake Leota with an eye to the possibility of constructing a sanitary swimming pool within the lake itself states: an adequate swimming facility cannot be accomplished at a reasonable cost within your present pond area. A topographic survey was made of the shoreline of the pond above the dam in the vicinity of the park and in the vicinity of the arch dams. Soundings indicate lack of sand and gravel underground in the vicinity of the present swimming area.
40 Years Ago (1965): Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cain, lifelong residents of Evansville and vicinity, will quietly observe their 63rd wedding anniversary Saturday, Nov.27. Mr. and Mrs. Cain are the parents of five children, Mrs. Donald Ellis, Madison; Olive Cain, Beloit; Clifton, Oshkosh, and Mrs. Helen Deininger and Kenneth Cain, Evansville. There are also several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
30 Years Ago (1975): There will be a three-church Thanksgiving Eve worship service on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the United Church of Christ Congregational. The Baptist Church will provide the liturgist and choir and the United Methodist Church will provide the minister.
20 Years Ago (1985): Kyle Schneider will be seen on the Channel 15 News “Sidelights” Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 6:00 and 10:00 pm, in connection with his role as Tiny Tim in the Children’s Theatre Production of “A Christmas Carol.”
10 years ago (1995): Bill Alt, an industrial service engineer from Wisconsin Power and Light presented a check for $400 to Kathy Rohde, accepting on behalf of the Friends of the Eager Free Public Library. The WP&L Foundation has a long history of funding community projects. The frieze and stained glass windows of the original 1908 library can be seen from the interior of the addition that is under construction.
